How Can You Make Your Computer Faster ?

| Wednesday | 0 comments
These days many of us use our computers a lot and they seem to be running slower than it did even last week. What is up? Heres some ways to get back that speed and even improve on it a little and what's really cool is they're easy to do and don't cost anything !

Before we start just make sure you back everything up in case something horrible happens.

1. Clean and organize your hard drive.

Sometimes people just dump a ton of files into the root directory of their hard drive making it unorganised and slow. Use Windows Explorer and create a filing cabinet system of folders and sub folders that makes sense to you so and store your files accordingly. This will also make it easier by the way for anyone else who needs to use your files and find something.

While you're in Windows Explorer look for any 'temp' folders with files inside them ending with .tmp and delete them.

2. Check your hard drive.

While still in Windows Explorer, right click on the C: drive and select Properties. Go to the Tools tab click on the Check Now... button. Tick all the options and click on the Start button. Verify that you want to perform a check after a reboot. Do this for any other hard drive you might have in your computer. Reboot your computer and let the system check the hard drives and fix any issues. This might take some time, so be patient.

3. Clean up Internet Explorer records.

Searching the Internet is a certain cause for putting stuff on your computer that will slow it down. Prior to doing anything with your Internet Explorer, make sure you know the critical data you enter at the websites you visit. You will be clearing the history, and that saved data will be gone. Usually it is not needed, but there might be some things that you have come to depend on, such as passwords, logins etc.

For Internet Explorer, choose Tools... Internet Options. A new window will open. In the Temporary Internet records section, choose to Erase Cookies and OK. Click on Erase Records and OK and then in the History section, click Clear History and Yes. Then choose OK to close the Internet Options.

For Firefox, select Tools ... Options. In the Privacy section, select the Clear All button and Clear All Data. Then select OK to close the Options window.

For other browsers, there ought to be similar settings.

4. Update your anti virus software and anti virus signatures. Keep them up to date. I would suggest setting your anti virus software to automatically update every day. Perform a full anti virus scan on your PC.

5. If you do not have anti-spyware software installed on your system, you definitely need to get one and get one soon. Microsoft has a free one that you can get at their website called Windows Defender and ought be available to download from Microsoft. Make sure you keep your anti-spyware software up to date and keep it up to date.

6. Defragment your hard drives. From your Explorer window, right click on the C: drive and select Properties. Then select the Tools tab and Defragment Now... button. Highlight the C: drive and select the Defragment button. Carry out this operation for each drive in you PC.

Carry out these steps on a routine basis and your computer ought run much better.

Memory Upgrades for Vista Operating Systems

Now that Vista is officially out, many of you are dying to run out and buy it. I know that many will upgrade without first checking system requirements or system compatibility. This article is for you. When you try to install Vista, you may quickly find out that something will need to be upgraded. Most likely it will be RAM, video or both.

First we will look at memory. I am talking about system memory or RAM. Before we go further, my associate says I need to write about something more important. That is the peripherals, things like mice, cameras, scanners, printers. For most of these, you will find that there are no Vista compatible drivers available. The chain stores are going to be pushing Vista systems, but be patient and wait for the hardware to catch up. Here is where you will do better talking with your small neighborhood tech shops to find out if your computer will work with Vista.

For those who want to upgrade for Vista, additional memory may have to be installed. RAM (Random Access Memory) is used by the system to run applications. You can never have enough RAM. The current standard has been 512megs. But as the software becomes larger, system resources really become an issue. This is true with the new security suites like Norton or McAfee. Today, I would not consider a system with less then 1gig of RAM. You can run Vista on 512megs, but you would not be able to enjoy all the features and your system may perform very poorly.

To speed up your system and upgrade your RAM, you need to know a few details. You need to find out how much RAM you have, what type/speed, and how much your system will support. To find out how much, go to your START button, right click on My Computer, then select Properties. After the dialog box opens, look down to the bottom right. You will see information for the type and speed of the processor. There will also be a number indicating the amount of RAM installed. It will read 265, 512 or 1024 gigs.

On many of the mass produced machines, there may be an odd number like 448. That is because system memory is shared with the video. To find out the type and how much the system will support, check the system documentation. Check the specs in either the printed materials or check online. Sometimes there are stickers on the front. Look for something that reads like DDR XXX, (DDR400 for example), or PCXXX (PC3200 as another example).

If you have never done this, or are not comfortable opening your computer, you may want to get a service technician to install the RAM. They will still need all the above information. Now we can open the computer and install the memory.

1) Unplug the power on the computer. Most motherboards still are powered, even with the power switch off. So remove the plug completely. Ok, pull the power and unplug everything that is attached to the tower. Mark them if you need to, so you can put them back.

2) Lay the tower on the right side and remove the left side cover. Inside you will see many colored wires and cables. Carefully part these until you can get to the memory slots. They are called DIMM slots. There can be two or more depending on the motherboard. They will be located close to the processor (big metal fins with the fan motor). You will also see the existing memory stick.

3) On each end of the DIMM slots there is a white clip. Make sure they are pushed back to the opened position. Look at your new stick of RAM. You will see 1 or 2 notches. These will match up with dimples in the memory slot. Carefully line up the stick and firmly press it into the slot until you hear it snap into place. Now, secure the two locking clips and you are done.

4) Stand the system back up (leaving the cover off at this point). Plug in the mouse, keyboard and monitor. Plug in the power and fire the system up. One of 2 things will happen. If everything is alright, the system will boot like normal and you can watch the new amount of RAM count up on the screen. If this happens, then you are finished installing the RAM.

The second thing that could happen is the machine starts beeping and will not boot. Do not panic, all this means is that the RAM is not seated correctly. Simply shut it down and unplug the power. Remove the new stick of RAM and reseat it again making sure it snaps firmly into place. You may need to press a little harder than you think. Test the system again by rebooting. Once you are done, replace the cover, put the tower back, and attach all the accessories.

Let me just say again, if you are not comfortable opening and working on your computer then you will be better off letting a technician help you.

What's The Best Computer and Why

You might be surprised at the answer. Through the years I have been asked this question many times. People understandably would like to know the answer before spending their money. Many think that the only answer is in the big names that they have heard. And it's no wonder these same companies have spent millions promoting their names.

What would make up the best computer? In my opinion it should have a minimum of these qualities. Be reliable, easy to upgrade, parts readily available, easy to work on and long lasting. The only one that meets all these requirements is the generic computer that is built by you or a computer dealer.

Computers are different than almost any other product. You probably wouldn't want to build your own car for example. But early on manufacturers began supplying Cases motherboards and the rest of the parts to build a computer. So an industry sprang up and some bigger companies plus local dealers built computer to your specifications. These had many advantages the main one being that you could find parts anywhere at reasonable prices.

What sometimes happens for example is say a motherboard goes bad. Because of the way the major manufacturers computer is built a generic or another manufacturers won't fit this has nothing to do with the electronics it's a mechanical thing it physically won't fit or screw holes won't line up. Now the generic motherboard might run $80.00 to $100.00 while the major manufacturers could be $250.00 to $300.00 or more. After paying that much for parts plus the labor many are thrown in the junk rather than fixing. The same goes for power supplies. Many times the off the shelf power supplies won't work in these computers. They will make you pay dearly and many times the power supply will need to be special ordered from the major manufacturer.

In other respects I think the computers are about equal. Taking into account that almost all of the parts in the major Brands are made by the same companies that make the generic parts. In selecting your generic computer do some research in is quality of product. What desktop computers will last, and which ones would not? What are the highest quality components? Does the company offering you desktop computer deals provide good warranties? Finding a cheap computer is less exciting when you find out that that computer is a lemon. The fact is that desktop computer deals are not real deals if you get a machine that doesn't last out of them.

Our discussion has only covered desktops and the pc. The apple computer is a different story and isn't covered here. Laptops are another story also and I will cover these in another article. If you were to ask almost any computer dealer I think most would agree with what I have said.

Lately the majors have started to make their computers more compatible. Maybe they have begun to see the light. In the mean time I hope you will consider buying your computer from your local dealer or repair shop.

How To Upgrade Your Computer's Graphics Card

Your graphics card is responsible for sending data to the monitor to display pictures, presentations, and videos that you love so much. That being the case,it would be a great benefit to you if you get and keep your graphics card up to date.

We all love to play those in depth, high resolution games and this is the main reason we either upgrade our graphics card or purchase a new computer altogether. And when we can use all of the cool features these games provide, they are an absolute blast.

If your graphics card seems slow you may want to update your current card by visiting its support web site and look for any patches or new device drivers.

Take the time to download and install these files and you should see a big leap in the performance of your graphics card. As you download the files, don't forget where you saved them.

If your computer is getting old, keep in mind that older systems are equipped with slower processors. So if you have a 500 MHz CPU Chip you should consider upgrading the entire system rather than just the graphics card.

For the last several years there have been only two graohics card competitors designing gaming cards. The ATI and the Nvidia manufacturers should be considered when it comes to new card purchases.

How To Know Your Graphics Card

The first thing you should know is the name of the graphics card in your system unit.To determine your card by clicking on Start, Control Panel, and choosing Appearance and Themes.

Next choose Display and click on the settings tab. You should see the name of your graphics card. Visit your card's web support site to see how old your card is and capabilities. Now you can decide how you want to upgrade.

After understanding your old card's features and knowing its name, you're now ready to decide how much you want to invest in a new card. You should update your graphics card even if your system is new.

Why you ask? New or not,if the graphics card is integrated on the motherboard, its performance is being handled by low end technology.

Some of the better graphic cards you should upgrade to would be the ATI or the Axxxxxxx Txxxxxxx Ixxxxxxx Radeon X800 or Nvidia's GeForce FX 6800 chips.

Before installing your new card, delete any software and the old device driver for the old card.To remove this file, click on Start, Control Panel, click on Add and Remove programs. Now look for any references to your graphics card.

Look for such phrases as display drivers. You can remove them by selecting them and clicking on the Change/Remove button.

If your old graphics card was on the motherboard, you must disable it before you install your new card. To disable the integrated graphics, access your BIOS and look for referances to Onboard or Integrated devices.

Find the entry for graphics or display device and change the setting to disable or off. After this you save the changes and exit.

Now you can remove the old card if its in an empty adapter slot and install your new card.Read our article named How To Install A Graphics Card to learn this procedure step by step.

Newer graphics cards are designed for use with both CRT or Cathode Ray Tube and the LCD or the Liquid Crystal Display monitors.

Basics Of A Pen Drive

A Pen Drive is a compact, removable storage device just like a floppy disk or a CD. Instead of the floppy device or the CD ROM that are used for reading a floppy disk and CD respectively, a pen drive can be plugged into the USB (Universal Serial Bus) Port of a computer. The USB connectivity makes the pen drive easier to use and data can be transferred faster to and from the pen drive.

Different Manufacturers have named Pen Drives they manufacture differently. Today, a pen dive goes by the names of thumb drive, USB flash drive, Jump Drive, Traveler`s Drive, USB key drive, USB memory stick and many others!

These pen drives are small, inexpensive, almost ubiquitous and extremely handy. They are available largely in the range of 1 to 8 GB which makes them of great use and has made floppy disks and CDs look like useless storage mediums.

The credit of inventing the pen drives goes to IBM. It was invented in 1988 to replace the floppy disks, but IBM never patented it. IBM contracted in M-Systems to manufacture the Pen Drive and the patent is now owned by them.

The pen drive is a modern floppy disk. The main difference is that a floppy disk has moving parts which makes the data stored on the drive vulnerable to loss. A pen drive, on the other hand is a solid state device i.e. it has no moving parts. This makes it possible to almost completely seal the pen drive making it dust-proof and the common magnetic fields. Hence, a pen drive is a much safer option for storing important data.

The latest operating systems like (Windows XP, Linux and Mac OS 2) can recognize these pen drives and mount them automatically. Once it is connected, recognized and mounted by the operating system, it appears just like any other partition of the hard disk except it is named as removable storage.

The pen drive can be removed any time after it is un-mounted (safely remove hardware in case of Windows) and can be re-plugged into the same or a different machine to be used again. A pen drive`s most important use is to transport data and files from one machine to another. For e.g. one can simply copy all the word processing documents, images and spreadsheets to the pen drive, carry it along and copy the files on his/her home computer and work on it at home.

Some users have found the pen drive useful in moving their internet browser History, Cache, Cookies, and other transient data. This improves their privacy and security as no traces of the work done on the machine is left on the PC. Once copied to the drive, the files can be made more secured by encryption or any other method of security.

The pen drives can also be used to store operating systems to boot the computer. This makes them popular for repair and diagnostic work. Instead of carrying tools and maintenance software applications on CDs, a pen drive can be used which is faster and can be manipulated easily in case the software is upgraded or is no more useful.

A pen drive is one of the most economical mobile medium for data storage in terms of cost per unit storage space. They are really light-weight and robust in nature which has made it a big hit and a very important and indispensable tool for a large number of users.

USB Flash Drives and Promotional Merchandise

USB Flash Drives have become increasingly popular as promotional incentives for a number of reasons. The promotional incentives market is always receptive to new and exciting ways to reach the target audience. Traditionally promotional products have been branded with a company’s logo to leave a lasting impression with the prospect. The usability of the giveaway is a key component to its success. This is the reason why gifts such as Pens, Notepads, Clothing and general business accessories have always been popular! The USB Flash Drive has taken this to another level altogether – now you can give potential prospects a USB Flash Drive and be confident your branding will hit home. The major innovation to the promotional incentives market is the way in which the device can be manipulated to suit the needs of various organizations.

For example, the USB Flash Drive can be preloaded with data prior to it being given away. This allows useful information to be at the fingertips of the recipient. This could be in the form of a PDF, PowerPoint, Video, etc. This is the ideal way for companies to make sure that when a potential prospect leaves they have a permanent reminder of exactly what the company can offer. This could be in the form of a document, a price list etc.

They are typically small, lightweight, removable and rewritable storage devices. USB flash drives offer numerous advantages over other portable storage devices i.e. floppy disk. They are compact, faster; hold more data, and have superior reliability due to their lack of moving parts and durable design. In addition it has become common for computers no longer to have floppy disk drives. Conversely USB ports appear on nearly all PC and laptop’s nowadays.

PERL Programming - Approach to Server-Side Scripting

The first version of Perl (Perl 1.000) was published in 1987 by Larry Wall; so Perl is 4 years senior to Linux. Larry Wall was at that time working with UNIX commands and was not happy by the operation of sed, awk and the Bourne Shell. He was searching for a language that will provide him all the supreme features of the UNIX commands and having very minimum margin of error.

In 1994 Perl 5.0 was published. This version was a replica of Perl Interpreter. In addition to that, it had hard references and object concept. But the evolution of Perl is a continuous process and the latest version is Perl 5.8.X.

Initially Perl was used for the server-side scripting in Web-Servers but now it is massively being used in system administration tasks, manipulating databases and creating GUI applications etc.

Perl offers:
1. In depth access of strings and data structures.
2. Strong debugger attached with visual front-ends.
3. Execution in every platform.
4. Provision of namespaces, classes and objects.
5. Comparatively portable.
6. Extensive syntax and in-built functions.

Some Salient Features of Perl:

1. Both the structured-oriented and the object-oriented programming technologies are supported by Perl.
2. Perl supports the third-party database inferences such as MySQL, Sybase, and Oracle etc.
3. It is an open-source language.
4. Perl is compatible with Y2K.
5. As it is an Open-Source language, it can be embedded into other system.
6. Perl is compiled with Over 500 third party utilities which increases its adaptability.
7. Perl is compatible with XML, HTML etc

Perl is compatible with following O.S.:
1. Unix systems
2. Macintosh - (OS 7-9 and X)
3. Windows
4. Linux

Perl and the world of web:
1. Text manipulation capabilities and rapid development cycle made Perl the most popular language in the world of Web development.
2. It can work with the encrypted data which helps it to operate e-commerce transaction.
3. Perl energises the processing capacity of Web servers by 2000%.

Resemblance with Natural Language:
Natural languages are those which people use in their daily life, as a colloquial language. These languages are rich, complete and allow the users to express their feelings more accurately and briefly. The relevance between Perl and Natural language is that they go parallel. Larry Wall, the creator of Perl was a linguist and used his linguistic knowledge to design Perl.

As every natural language becomes appreciable by the people of all skills and circumstances; even a kid is allowed to express himself to others. Perl is something like that, as it can be written in small code and also by the naive programmers. It is a very worthy language with several features. It is recommended for the learner of Perl to keep the versatility of Perl in their mind. As a slight change in the source code can result a big change in the runtime. As Perl is manual handy, so it is also recommended to use the manuals of Perl to understand others' code.

After Market Software Development - Potential Residual Income

For many software developers writing code is a passion. However, many have been displaced due to the rampant outsourcing of their jobs to overseas competition. this is truly sad, however it could be an opportunity for those same developers to partake in the rapidly growing arena of after market software development.

There are a few open source applications where it may be possible to utilize the strong community support for your own financial gain. The first application that springs to mind is DotNetNuke (http://www.dotnetnuke.com) open source content management system. This is by far one of the most popular open Source .Net applications in recent history. At the time this article was written there was a total of 250,000 registered users of the DotNetNuke framework.

One of the most popular ways to make money off of this application is to develop your own custom modules and skins and then resell them either on your own website or the defacto standard website Snowcovered.com. The benefit of using snowcovered.com is that they handle all the details of selling your product so you do not have to worry about it. The after market for this particular open source application is huge!

The second open source application where it is possible to make some residual income is the ever so popular Firefox web browser. You can see examples of this by doing a simple Google search to see what extensions are possible. While some chose to give their software away some do sell their plugins for a modest fee. This seems only fair as the developer most likely devoted some of their free time in order to build the tool and should be properly compensated for it.

Lastly the ever so popular Visual Studio.Net is known for its ease of extensibility and it has a pretty large user base already built in. Now this is not an open source product by any means however there is a definite after market for selling extensions to the IDE. One of the most popular extension to the IDE is pinvoke.net and its IDE plug in where a programmer can look up a .Net assembly for a given Win32 apl call and vice versa. I am sure this has saved many programmers loads of time when developing their applications.

I can remember all of the after market products that were sold during the days of Visual Basic 3.0 to extend the functionality of that development environment. Once a software product reaches a critical mass of users and is as extensible as those applications mentioned above it is only a matter of time where some "micro-economies" start to form around them. If you are under employed you should seriously consider finding these niche products where you can still utilize your skill set and potentially build up some really sizeable residual income to boot.
